Impressions of the annual meeting 2023

Prof. Thomas Wiegand had called for the annual bio-N³MR network NRW meeting 2023 to RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Beat H. Meyer of ETH Zürich, an internationally distinguished pioneer of solid state NMR spectroscopy on amyloids and prions, joined the meeting as invited key note speaker. Prof. Müge Kasanmascheff of TU Dortmund had accepted the invitation as second key note speaker. In recent ground breaking studies she used EPR spectroscopic methods for characterization of biological macromolecules in their cellular environment. The third invited guest speaker was Dr. Kristof Grohe (Bruker Biospin), an application scientist from industry. He presented innovative products of Bruker Biospin in the area of solid state NMR spectroscopy.

The talk of Prof. Beat H. Meyer reflected the huge advances of solid state NMR spectroscopy over the last decades in a very impressive way. In particular, his practical examples demonstrated the advantages of ultra-high magnetic field strength (28,2 T) and ultra-fast MAS rotation frequencies (160 kHz) for signal assignment of amino acid side chains in proteins.

Prof. Müge Kasanmascheff provided insight into her studies of biologically active, higher-order DNA G-Quadruplex structures and on MetalloDNAzymes.

Dr. Kristof Grohe, demonstrated the superior performance of last generation solid state probe heads featuring ultra-fast MAS rotation in connection with the new software package „Dynamics Center“.

Julia Kotschy (Dortmund) was one of six young scientists from the groups of the network who presented their work in talks.
