Impressions of the annual meeting 2013

Klaus Gawrisch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, was the guest speaker of the annual meeting of the bio-N3MR network in Jülich on September 17th 2013. Klaus Gawrisch was one of the first who realized the huge potential of NMR spectroscopy for the detailed characterization of lipid membranes. Over the last three decades, he contributed a number of innovative concepts to materialize his vision. His fundamental NMR based studies on the biophysics of polyunsaturated lipids and on the interaction of G protein coupled receptors (GPCR) with lipids are highly respected in the field. PhD students and postdocs took advantage of the network meeting by presenting their research projects in talks and posters and by engaging in discussions with partners from the other groups in the bio-N3MR network. Representatives of the company Cube Biotech introduced their strategies and service offerings in the area of cell free synthesis of membrane proteins.

Please enjoy the snapshots of the annual meeting 2013 of the bio-N3MR network in Jülich:

Dr. Klaus Gawrisch addressed the role of polyunsaturated lipids in biological membranes and presented his studies on the interaction of these lipids with the GPCR rhodopsin.

Aziz Gauhar, PhD student in the junior research group of Dr. Wolfgang Hoyer at the University of Düsseldorf introduced structural studies on α-synuclein conducted by NMR spectroscopy.

Julia Herfurth, PhD student at the University Duisburg-Essen, presented the results of her studies of the antimicrobial peptide cecropin P1.

Participants of the meeting gained insight into the current research efforts of the partner groups.

Dr. Barbara Maertens, Cube Biotech Monheim, highlighted the potential of cell free synthesis for production of membrane proteins both in her talk and in many individual discussions.

The coffee break was used for discussions of the exhibited posters.

Dr. Manuel Etzkorn introduced the scientific agenda of his junior research group, which was only recently established at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf.

The network meeting was concluded with a get-together with roasted meat, vegetarian delights, soft drinks and beer.
