Impressions of the annual meeting 2017
At the annual meeting 2017 of the bio-N3MR network in Jülich on September 22nd 2017 we were happy to welcome Prof. Daniel Huster, director of the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics at the University of Leipzig. The lab of Daniel Huster has made outstanding contributions to the characterization of lipids, membrane proteins and their interactions in model membranes using solid state NMR spectroscopy as well as complementary techniques. Studies on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in membranes represent a particular highlight of Daniels research. Characterization of fibrils made of different variants of the amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides and their role in Alzheimer's disease is another focal point of Prof. Huster's scientific work. In his plenary lecture, Daniel Huster reported on NMR spectroscopy-based studies of GPCRs and Aβ fibrils. PhD students and postdocs from groups organized in the network, a scientist of the University Cologne, and a representative of the biotech company Merck Life Sciences enriched the symposium with additional fascinating talks.

Prof. Daniel Huster presented current research data on the ghrelin receptor and Aβ fibrils.
Daniel Schölzel, PhD student in the solid state NMR group of Prof. Henrike Heise at the University of Düsseldorf, presented a very recently published new structure of Aβ fibrils, where the N-terminus of the Aβ peptide adopts a defined structure in contrast to previous studies.
Marianne Schulte, PhD student at the University of Düsseldorf utilizes NMR spectroscopy to gain deeper insight into the molecular mechanism of the catalysis of aldol reactions by the enzyme DERA.
Dr. Christine Beuck, postdoc at the University of Duisburg-Essen, develops a toolbox of NMR experiments aiming at unraveling interactions of proteins with supramolecular ligands.
Dr. Dolores Diaz of the University Cologne and her team use NMR spectroscopy for detailed analyses of metabolic processes. She reported on resent work on metabolomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid.
Dr. Matthias Schulze introduced the recently reorganized company Merck Life Sciences and gave an overview on the products and service offerings of his company aimed at biologically oriented and NMR spectroscopy-based research.
Jan Borggräfe, PhD student in the junior research group of Dr. Manuel Etzkorn provided insight into his studies of structural aspects of DNA-mediated catalysis reactions.
Dr. Manuel Etzkorn, head of an independent Emmy Noether junior research group at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf presented various model membranes optimized for NMR spectroscopic investigations of cellular signal transduction.
